Brand new year and brand new projects. The first assignment brief of the new year for Press and Editorial Photography at Falmouth is here. This new project is called “The Relationship” project and for this I will have to photograph exactly what is in the title, relationships. The assignment is to take images of people interacting with one another, conveying a relationship between the subjects as I do so. People interact with each other in varying ways and the images can display family relationships, community relationships, religious relationships, couples, work/business, school even relationships between people and their pets. In fact, when I inquired just to how wide of a range of relationships I can capture I was told that I could photograph a person and their close relationship to a table lamp as long as I could make it compelling!
The specifics of brief are to, of course, capture any type of relationship/s in five images. The five images can with be of individual images of different relationships or different images depicting the same relationship. They all need to be different and visually interesting in their own right. Some constraints include that a max of 100 images will be shot per subject, no more and that the images will be shot in RAW.
As an ask, the tutors want us to try to photograph people other than close friends and family but if we do decided to use friends and family in our photographs then we must fully explore the subject and elevate the work beyond what you think you already know about your subjects, expanding our perspectives.
When the work is submitted for assessment, we are ask to have our captions either printed on an adhesive label or affixed to the prints rather than using double-sided tape to attach the paper labels to the prints (which is what I did for the first submission of prints because I don’t know where to get adhesive labels from and honestly, the captions most likely weren’t very straight but I know better for next time now).
The final deadline for submission of the project is May 2nd, so I have plenty of time to really think about and undertake this project. I have a few ideas in mind already, in particular I’m really glad that I get to explore the relationship between people and their pets considering I’m a huge animal lover with 11 dogs of my own, which I would do anything for. I have also taken images in the past that would’ve been great for this project, so I plan on looking back on those and possibly revisiting or attempting to seek out relationships of a similar nature to them.
