After my initial idea for this project I decided to amend it. Instead of doing people in their pets with a juxtaposing element (which I was finding a bit difficult to do as anyone who owned a more irregular pet didn’t want to be photographed) I decided to narrow my project to owners and their dogs and title it ‘Man’s Best Friend’.
After I came up with this idea, I looked at the work of Christopher Ameruoso for inspiration.
Photographer Christopher Ameruoso is widely known as a premier animal photographer to high-profile celebrities such as Sharon Osborne, Paris Hilton and Dominic Monaghan.
He has been working for 13 years as a photographer and has snapped almost 500 stars with their dogs, lizards and micro-pigs.
He often works with Pamela Anderson who rescues animals and plans to continue working with her on the project.
Although most of his shoots go well, Ameruoso does encounter problems working with animals, but he has said they are often humorous problems.
“When I photographed Slash with his snakes and bearded dragon at one point I had asked him to place the bearded dragon on his famous top hat that he was wearing,' said Ameruoso.
“Soon after the lizard jumped off and went for a run in the streets of Beverly Hills. It looked like a mini scene from Jurassic Park. It was classic.”
“Another time, when I was photographing Megan Fox she brought along her entire collection of pets. That is she brought her pot-bellied pig, two birds, three dogs and a cat. There I was behind my lens with one of the most beautiful women in the world with a cat purring, the dogs barking, birds whistling and the pig squealing and I thought to myself, "Wow, my life is great!” It was a surreal moment.”
Because of his fame within the niche of celebrity pet photography, Ameruoso never finds it difficult to find stars willing to pose with their pets.
'They are always fine and usually very keen to do it with their pets,” he says.
“However, I always find that after the first 30 frames the celebrities start to get a bit restless with the shoot, while it is the dogs, cats or lizards who relax the most.”
Looking at his work, I decided that I wanted to do something different to how he conducts his shoots. The pictures in his work are generally more posed with the owners looking at the camera but I’d rather have my images a little more natural and I definitely don’t want the people to look at the camera, I want them engaging more with their pets to better show the relationship between humans and dogs.
